Ending Child Marriage: Mariana Muzzi

0 comments

"By focusing on increasing female teachers and supporting girls' completion of primary school (or more years of schooling) I believe we could play a catalytic role in changing the perception of valuing girls' education by all, and potentially this could contribute to ending child marriage."

At the Social and Behavioural Change Communication Summit, Mariana Muzzi presented on child marriage. Five strategies derived from the peer review literature were presented:

  • Empowering girls with information, skills, and support networks;
  • Educating and mobilising parents and community members;
  • Enhancing the accessibility and quality of formal schooling for girls;
  • Offering economic support and incentives for girls and their families such as conditional cash transfers (CCTs); and
  • Fostering an enabling legal and policy framework
  1. From your experence on child marraige issues do you agree with this approach?
  2. Has this strategy proved effective in your context?
  3. Based on your insights and analysis what communication and media strategic principles do you propose to address child marriage issues?
